Erik Voorhees: The Man on a Mission to Make Money Free Again
If you’ve ever explored the world of cryptocurrency, you’ve likely come across the name Erik Voorhees. He’s not just a Bitcoin early adopter he’s one of the most passionate voices for financial freedom and decentralization. With a calm demeanor and a sharp mind, Erik has spent over a decade challenging the traditional banking system, advocating for privacy, and building tools that empower individuals. His work, from launching crypto startups to speaking at global events, has helped shape the modern crypto landscape into what it is today.

From College Graduate to Crypto Visionary
Erik Voorhees grew up in Colorado and later earned his degree in Business Leadership and Political Economics from the University of Puget Sound in 2007. While many of his peers went on to follow conventional career paths, Erik’s curiosity led him down a different road. He was drawn to the idea of liberty, decentralization, and alternative systems of value. That mindset eventually led him to the Free State Project in New Hampshire, where he discovered Bitcoin in 2011 and instantly realized it was more than just digital money. It was a revolution waiting to happen.
Erik never stepped into the Shark Tank TV show, but in the crypto space, he’s very much a shark bold, strategic, and not afraid to swim against the current. In April 2012, Voorhees launched Satoshi Dice, a bitcoin gambling site . He started making waves with Satoshi Dice, a Bitcoin-based gambling platform that became wildly popular in 2012. At one point, it was handling more Bitcoin transactions than any other service. After selling it for over $11 million, he went on to work at BitInstant, an early Bitcoin exchange, before founding his most well-known venture: ShapeShift.
Building ShapeShift Fast, Private, Borderless Crypto
In 2014, Erik launched ShapeShift, a game-changing crypto exchange that let users swap digital currencies without creating an account. No personal info. No bank involved. Just fast and easy crypto trades. This was decentralization in action no middlemen, just pure peer-to-peer freedom. But pioneering ideas often come with challenges. Erik had to settle with the SEC over a past project’s unregistered securities issue. Instead of retreating, he used the experience to keep refining his vision: building tools that align with both innovation and personal liberty.
Web3, AI, and the Next Frontier
Never one to stand still, Erik has now stepped into the world of AI and Web3 with a project called Venice. It’s a privacy-focused generative AI that uses blockchain and decentralized tech to protect user data. In a world where Big Tech monitors every click and scroll, Venice offers an alternative where you control your own data, and payments are permissionless. It’s yet another example of how Erik blends cutting-edge technology with deep-rooted principles of autonomy, freedom, and privacy.

What makes Erik Voorhees unique isn’t just that he was early to crypto—it’s that he deeply believes in what it stands for. For him, Bitcoin and blockchain aren’t about quick profits. They’re about building a future where people aren’t at the mercy of broken systems. He’s regularly invited to speak at major conferences, appears in documentaries like Banking on Bitcoin, and engages in thoughtful debates on platforms like Twitter, where he goes by Erik Voorhees. Through it all, he remains committed to one simple idea: money should be free.
