From her early fascination with the mysteries of the universe to her groundbreaking work in healthcare data science, Sonali has consistently focused on one goal: to create solutions that improve lives and empower communities. Sonali’s journey into data science has been a wonderful mix of learning, exploring new ideas, and constantly growing. In high school, she dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon but later pursued physics at the Indian Institute of Technology and earned a PhD in particle physics from Indiana University, Bloomington. “It’s the fundamental questions about how the universe works that fascinated me the most,” she says. Her time in particle physics involved extensive coding, simulations, and problem-solving, which naturally led her to explore mathematics, optimization, and eventually, data science. After earning a certificate in data science from the University of Washington, she transitioned into healthcare, working at Virginia Mason Medical Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. This journey, though non-linear, shaped her into a professional with both deep technical expertise and a holistic view of the world.

Among Sonali’s proudest achievements is her work on a predictive model for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). This project aimed to identify patients at risk of emergency room visits and help healthcare providers design personalized interventions. SCD predominantly affects people of colour and has historically faced underfunding and health disparities. For Sonali, the opportunity to contribute to such a critical area felt like a privilege. “Every line of data in healthcare represents someone’s life. Knowing that our work can reduce suffering and improve care is deeply fulfilling,” she shares. Using advanced data analytics techniques, including Shapley values and retrieval-augmented generation, she helped create tools that empower clinicians to make informed, patient-centered decisions.

Sonali’s approach to leadership is rooted in collaboration, curiosity, and a belief in people’s potential. In 2023, she led her team in an AI hackathon project to support regulatory compliance teams, earning second place. This experience reflected her growth as a leader, someone who not only contributes technically but also inspires others to bring their best ideas forward. “I see others as the best versions of themselves and enjoy cheering them on. That’s the kind of leadership I strive for,” she says. She is the founder and organizer of the Generative AI Collaborative Learning Club at Fred Hutch, bringing together experts from Harvard, MIT Media Lab, Microsoft, and more to explore AI’s vast possibilities in healthcare and beyond.

Looking ahead, Sonali is committed to the idea of “AI for Good”. She envisions creating technologies that address pressing global challenges, from health equity to climate change. Through her company, QumanAI, she is exploring ways to share her expertise and align efforts with like-minded leaders. QumanAI offers executive and organizational coaching and brainstorming to help realize the tremendous promise of AI responsibly and ethically, especially in healthcare.  “We are at a historic moment. AI is not just shaping the future of technology, it’s shaping the future of humanity,” she says. Sonali’s impact extends beyond her technical contributions. She is a passionate mentor, guiding young professionals and women in tech to pursue their dreams confidently. Whether it’s through community initiatives like Destination Health Equity or one-on-one mentorship, she invests in helping others unlock their potential. “My dream world is where everyone lives up to their fullest potential. Supporting and mentoring others is one small way I can contribute to that vision,” she explains.

At the core of Sonali’s journey is a sense of wonder for science and an unwavering commitment to justice and equity. “AI tools are incredibly powerful, and it’s our responsibility to use them wisely. I want to build a world where technology uplifts humanity,” she says with conviction.
