From Wall Street to Web3: Caitlin Long’s Mission to Modernize Finance

Last Updated: May 21, 2025By

In the heart of Wyoming, where the vast plains meet the rugged Rockies, a financial revolution is quietly taking shape. At its helm is Caitlin Long, a Wall Street veteran turned blockchain advocate, whose mission is to seamlessly integrate the world of cryptocurrencies with traditional banking systems. As the founder and CEO of Custodia Bank, Long’s story is one of courage, foresight, and an unrelenting drive to build a financial system that’s open to all. Her journey from corporate boardrooms to the forefront of blockchain innovation is nothing short of inspiring, a testament to what’s possible when vision meets action.

A Foundation in Finance and Law

Caitlin Long’s story begins in Wyoming, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wyoming in 1990. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Harvard, where she graduated with a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and a Master of Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government in 1994. These credentials armed her with a unique blend of legal, policy, and economic expertise, setting the stage for a remarkable career. For 22 years, Long navigated the high-stakes world of Wall Street, working at powerhouse firms like Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, and Salomon Brothers. Rising to the rank of Managing Director, she honed her skills in corporate finance, equity research, and even launched successful ventures in pensions and insurance. Her reputation as a top-rated analyst and her work directly for co-CEOs gave her a front-row seat to the inner workings of global finance. But it was a chance encounter with Bitcoin in 2012 that changed everything.

Discovering the Power of Blockchain

In 2012, while still at Morgan Stanley, Long stumbled upon Bitcoin and saw it as more than a digital currency it was a revolution. Blockchain, the technology behind it, promised a transparent, decentralized alternative to traditional finance. She dove in, becoming a Bitcoin evangelist and joining Morgan Stanley’s internal blockchain working group from 2014 to 2016. There, she explored how this nascent technology could transform banking, planting the seeds for her future endeavors.

Her passion for blockchain led her to Symbiont, an enterprise blockchain startup, where she served as chairman and president from 2016 to 2018. At Symbiont, Long spearheaded a project delivering market index data to Vanguard using blockchain, earning the company a spot on Forbes’ Fintech 50 in 2018. Her work was recognized with the MarketsMedia Women in Finance Award for Excellence in Blockchain in 2016, cementing her as a leader in the space.

Transforming Wyoming into a Blockchain Hub

Long’s roots called her back to Wyoming, where she saw an opportunity to make her home state a beacon for blockchain innovation. Collaborating with lawmakers from 2018 to 2019, she helped enact 20 blockchain-enabling laws, turning Wyoming into a haven for crypto businesses. Her leadership extended to chairing the WyoHackathon, fostering a vibrant tech ecosystem. These efforts weren’t just about policy they were about creating a foundation for a new financial future.

A personal moment sparked her advocacy in 2017, a flaw in Wyoming law prevented her from donating appreciated Bitcoin to fund a scholarship for female engineers at her alma mater. Determined to fix this, Long volunteered to amend the statute, igniting her mission to make Wyoming a blockchain oasis. Her work laid the groundwork for what would become her most ambitious project yet.

Building Custodia Bank

In 2020, Caitlin Long founded Custodia Bank, a Wyoming-chartered special-purpose depository institution designed to bridge traditional finance and crypto. Custodia’s mission is clear: to provide a regulated, secure platform for businesses to engage with digital assets. In November 2023, the bank launched its Bitcoin custody platform, approved by the Wyoming Division of Banking, targeting fiduciaries, investment advisers, and corporate treasurers. This move marked a significant step toward mainstream crypto adoption, offering businesses a compliant way to hold Bitcoin. Custodia’s approach is unique it operates as Custodia Digital Services in states like Washington and Texas, ensuring compliance while expanding access. Long’s vision is to create a bank that’s not just crypto-friendly but a trusted partner in the financial ecosystem, blending the innovation of blockchain with the stability of regulation.

Facing Challenges, Shaping the Future

The path hasn’t been easy. Custodia Bank has faced regulatory hurdles, including a high-profile legal battle with the Federal Reserve over a master account, which would grant access to the federal payment system. Long has been outspoken about these challenges, calling out regulatory resistance to crypto integration. In a 2025 ETHDenver talk, she noted that federal agencies still view crypto exposure as unsafe for banks, despite a shifting political landscape. Her resilience shone through when she fought back against the Fed’s attempts to limit Custodia’s operations, a battle she discussed in multiple X Post.

Long’s advocacy extends beyond Custodia. She’s a prolific writer and speaker, sharing insights on her blog and in media outlets like CNBC and CoinDesk. Her 2023 article, “Why Can’t We Just Have Safe, Boring Banks?” called for a financial system that prioritizes stability and innovation. She’s also celebrated milestones, like banks entering the Bitcoin custody business, signaling mainstream adoption (X Post).

A Legacy of Impact

Caitlin Long’s contributions have earned her accolades, from recognition as one of Institutional Investor’s most influential people in pensions. But her true legacy lies in her vision a world where crypto and traditional finance work together to empower individuals. Through Custodia Bank, she’s building a bridge to that future, one Bitcoin at a time. Beyond her role at Custodia, Long is a prominent voice in the crypto community. She frequently shares insights on the intersection of blockchain and traditional finance, advocating for policies that promote innovation while ensuring stability and security.
