Waste2Wear Develops First Recycled Ocean Fabric To Be Traced By Blockchain

Last Updated: September 18, 2019By

Waste2Wear, a Dutch company, claims that it has developed the world’s first collection of recycled fabrics, made from ocean plastics, which can be traced with the help of blockchain.

Demand for tracing recycled materials

The eco-friendly company is holding an exhibition from September 17 for two days in Paris at Première Vision, the international textile fair.

Initially announced on August 20th, the collection was crafted by Waste2Wear particularly in response to the demand by the customers for traceable and recycled materials used in fabrics. The firm revealed the launch of the beta version of its blockchain system for the recent collection on August 22nd

Tons of plastic recovered from the ocean each week

Waste2Wear noted that plastic waste has to go through a very long procedure from the ocean to becoming a completed textile product, which needs various step-by-step data records.

With the help of blockchain technology, the firm expects to make the supply chain management of ocean plastic fabrics traceable.

The plastic which is used for the Waste2Wear Ocean Fabrics was collected from the coastal areas of a small island near Shanghai. With the help of local authorities, Waste2Wear was able to develop a business model which enabled the local fisherman to earn money by getting the plastics from the ocean. As per Waste2Wear, the fishermen collect over three tons of waste from the ocean every week.

This initiative by Waste2Wear is not the first of its kind to implement blockchain for ecological purposes. On September 4th, the Free Democratic Party in Germany announced that it will pay in crypto to anyone who eliminates greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
