The Top 10 Venture Capitalist Firms for Your Next Blockchain Startup

Blockchain and its various use-cases like cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and DeFi, have blown up in the last few years. With the sector’s increasing popularity, more companies have begun to adopt the technology, and more startups have sprung up with new innovations. 

As people get more comfortable with the idea of blockchain, more VC firms and investors are willing to back these companies. If you are a blockchain entrepreneur, here are the top 10 companies you can approach to back your company.

Digital Currency Group

Digital Currency Group has been an extremely influential investor in blockchain since 2013. They began with crypto payment processor BitPay, and have invested close to $100 million in dozens of blockchain and cryptocurrency startups since then. 

They were also early investors in Coinbase and Ripple. 

Pantera Capital

Pantera is a hedge fund founded in 2003 by Dan Morehead that specialises in cryptocurrencies. The firm launched the first investment fund focused on Bitcoin in the US in 2013, and has made over 30 venture investments in the blockchain space. They have also invested in several initial coin offerings (ICOs). 

Blockchain Capital

Blockchain Capital was founded in October and has since invested in over 36 blockchain companies. The firm boasts Brock Pierce, chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, as one of its founders and is one of the oldest venture investors in blockchain technology.

Their most recent investment was part of a $35 million series D funding round for a digital asset merchant bank called High Flyer.

Andreessen Horowitz

The venture firm’s fund, a16z, focuses on crypto companies and protocols. The company has had a hand in the development of Coinbase, OpenSea, Dfinity, Diem, Maker, and many more.

Node Capital

The venture capital company is based in Beijing and focuses most of its investment into blockchain-based companies. The fund seems to have a preference for ICOs rather than via seed or early-stage funding. Node Capital also offers a range of digital analytical tools to serve the cryptocurrency trading needs of investment management funds and banks.

Boost VC

While Boost VC is largely focused on the blockchain, it also invests in artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The company is more of an accelerator than a traditional venture firm, and has made contributions to companies like Ledger, Coinbase and the Libra Credit Network. 

Boost VC boasts Adam Draper is its co-founder, son of legendary venture capitalist and blockchain investor Tim Draper.

IDG Capital

IDG Capital is a multi-billion-dollar venture capital firm investing in a variety of startups, and has been relatively active in the blockchain. The firm has made angel and seed-stage investments into Ripple, and has since invested in Circle, Mars Financial, and others.

Draper Associates

Draper Associates is a venture capital firm that has a soft-spot for entrepreneurs and industry-changing companies. The company was founded in 1985 by Tim Draper, functioning as his personal investment vehicle until 2015, when Draper Associates Fund V was launched. 

Tim Draper received international attention for purchasing Bitcoin that the US Marshall Service had seized from illegal darknet marketplace Silk Road. 

Ceyuan Ventures

Ceyuan Ventures is based in Beijing and primarily invests in IT and emerging growth companies. The firm has made a name for themselves with investments in companies like Trip.io, Basis, and Mars Finance.

Lightspeed Venture Partners 

Lightspeed Venture Partners is another multi-billion-dollar venture fund with offices in California, China, Israel, and India. The firm has backed over 400 companies in the enterprise technology, consumer, and health sectors, and have made a handful of relatively large investments in blockchain startups.
