Square-Enix Champions Blockchain Revolution with ‘Soccerverse’ MMO

Last Updated: July 14, 2024By

On July 11, Soccerverse, the pioneering entity behind the eponymous massively multiplayer online game, heralded a substantial $3.1 million funding round spearheaded by the illustrious Japanese gaming conglomerate Square-Enix.

Currently in its beta phase, Soccerverse is an avant-garde, blockchain-powered sports simulation echoing the essence of the revered Football Manager series. It empowers players to assume multifarious roles, from coaching a team to embodying a player, all within the innovative confines of the Polygon blockchain. Although the game operates on a free-to-play model, it incorporates web3 functionalities to enhance user engagement.

Per a communiqué from Soccerverse, Square-Enix helmed the latest funding initiative, with significant participation from the recurrent investor Hiro Capital.

Soccerverse’s Financial Trajectory: A Modest Yet Promising Ascent

While the $4 million amassed by Soccerverse may not dazzle the upper echelons of the tech sphere, the involvement of Square-Enix, the stalwart behind the iconic Final Fantasy series and numerous other intellectual properties, augurs well for the nascent venture.

Hideaki Uehara, General Manager of Investment and Business Development at Square-Enix, conveyed their fervor for the project in a statement featured in Soccerverse’s blog post:

Soccerverse epitomizes the pinnacle of innovation and uniqueness within blockchain gaming. We are exhilarated to embark on this journey as both investors and ardent enthusiasts.

Strategic Timing: The Crucial Element

The timing of this investment could prove pivotal for Soccerverse. Although the game is currently in its beta iteration, football management simulations are not traditionally considered mainstream within the gaming cosmos.

However, later this year, Sega and Sports Interactive are poised to unveil the latest installment in the Football Manager series, marking a significant reboot with its transition to the Unity game engine, offering a thoroughly revamped experience to its fanbase.

If Soccerverse can adeptly leverage this impending wave of enthusiasm—whether by catering to web3 aficionados alongside traditional gaming enthusiasts or by providing a compelling alternative for disillusioned mainstream gamers—it could yield substantial benefits.

Visionary Expansion: Soccerverse’s Future Prospects

Andy Gore, CEO of Soccerverse, elucidated the company’s strategic vision and the planned utilization of the newly acquired funds in a recent blog post:

“We are elated to collaborate with a global gaming titan like Square-Enix as we propel innovation and excellence within our game. This investment will enable us to achieve unprecedented levels of quality and to captivate a global audience.”
