USDT TRC-20 Will No Longer Require TRX For Gas Fees, What Does This Mean For Tron As It Aims To Dethrone Ethereum

According to the latest news from Tron founder Justin Sun, USDT TRC-20 stablecoin is set to enable gas-free transactions on the Tron blockchain. In a recent X post on the 25th of February, Justin Sun explains, “Tron’s Gas Free feature supporting USDT gas payments without the need for TRX will launch within the next week.”
Once classified among the cheapest blockchains for USDT use, Tron is a cost-friendly replacement for Ethereum’s ERC-20 USDT. However, it has failed to retain this reputation in recent months, becoming one of the most expensive blockchains for USDT transactions.
Tether’s GasFeesNow page also supports this reality, placing TRC-20 USDT gas charges at the top of the most expensive list compared to other supported networks. Tron charges between $3.22 and $6.54, while ERC-20 USDT TX fees are roughly $0.40 per transaction.
Tether also reports that TRC-20 USDT gas fees increased by a mile at the end of 2024, rising above $9 per transaction on December 9th last year. Due to this increase, Tron users are left to deal with the effects while processing stablecoin transactions.
As a reaction, the Tron Foundation kicked off the development of gas-free TRC-20 transaction tools in July 2024, with Sun previously setting the launch date for these features to Q4 2024. In his words, “I believe that similar services will greatly facilitate large companies in deploying stablecoin services on the blockchain, elevating blockchain mass adoption to a new level.”
