Seven Facts You Were Unaware Of About Vitalik Buterin And Ethereum

Last Updated: January 10, 2023By

As “The Merge,” the big update that will formally signify Ethereum’s conversion to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus, approaches, we’d like to offer some fascinating information about Ethereum’s creator Vitalik Buterin and his brainchild Ethereum. The Merge is a significant update that will signal Ethereum’s formal transition to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus. Vitaly Dmitriyevich “Vitalik” Buterin is a Canadian programmer well known as one of Ethereum’s co-founders. He is known by the alias “Vitalik.” Buterin was among the first individuals to enter the bitcoin sector. Below is a list of seven remarkable facts about his life:

  • Vitalik’s father was a computer scientist, and Vitalik went to him for Bitcoin-related knowledge. He started learning about Bitcoin at the early age of 17, while he was still a teenager.
  • At 19, Vitalik invented Ethereum, a decentralized mining network and software development platform. Vitalik founded Ethereum at that age when the bulk of us was still deciding which occupations to follow. Ethereum is now the second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, after only Bitcoin.
  • When Vitalik was in the third grade of an elementary school in Canada, he demonstrated exceptional intellect, putting him much ahead of his peers. He was placed in a class with other talented children, developing a keen interest in economics, computer science, and mathematics.

  • Buterin had a mind for analysis that was very advanced for the time, and he was also a gifted writer. Early in 2011, after a fortuitous meeting with a man on a Bitcoin site, he began writing for the Bitcoin Weekly newspaper. His objective at the moment was to acquire bitcoin. He was used to getting 5 BTC, comparable to $3.5 per BTC at the time. In the same year that Mihai Alisie approached him, he launched the establishment of his newspaper. Not only was he one of the co-founders, but he also served as the primary writer.

  • He did not go to a comprehensive university. He took advanced courses as a research assistant at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of cryptographer Ian Goldberg. Goldberg was on the former board of directors for the Tor Project. Buterin introduced his concept for Ethereum in a white paper published in 2013. In 2014, he was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship, a fellowship funded by the renowned venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Since then, he has been concentrating his efforts on Ethereum.
  • In 2017, the worldwide market value of Ethereum dropped by $4 billion due to a hoax involving Vitalik’s death in a car crash. This was a result of the extensive dissemination of the fake. The root of the fake news was a comment posted on 4Chan, a well-known online message board often utilized by internet trolls. Buterin was obliged to disprove his death, so he used social media to prove that he was still alive. He accomplished this by posting an Ethereum block number and its corresponding hash.
  • Why did he give the coin the name “Ethereum”? During his 2013 travels, while developing the whitepaper for Ethereum, he was inspired by a medieval scientific concept and researched science fiction language for more ideas. While browsing the Internet for similar terms, he came upon the phrase “ether.” In the 19th century, scientists thought that ether was a fluid that penetrated all matter and space, was transparent, wholly weightless, and frictionless, and could not be detected chemically or physically. In her book “The Infinite Machine” Camilla Russo states that “Vitalik wanted his platform to be the underlying and undetectable medium for every application, much as medieval scientists believed ether to be.”
