Revolutionizing Waste Management with Blockchain Technology

Last Updated: June 3, 2020By

Implementation of blockchain-based waste management can allow governments to trace and monitor waste right from its production to its disposal. The waste management process includes multiple steps like segregation, transportation, recycling, disposal, and analysis of waste data. Governments are not capable to trace these waste management steps. The reason is the large volume and variety of these processes and data connected with the generated waste. Also, it needs several people to perform their part during the waste management cycle, which makes tracking even more complex.

Having a single platform to trace all waste management activities can assist governments in resolving waste management problems. Blockchain can be that single decentralized platform. Blockchain-based waste management is supporting trace waste from its production to disposal for a greener environment.

Real-Life Blockchain-Based Waste Management Applications

The decentralized system that makes blockchain so unique is supporting governments to control all the waste management activities, like:

Rewarding Waste Segregation

Rewarding waste segregation is an initiative used by various governments and private organizations to encourage segregation at the household level. Recerreum is a blockchain platform that utilizes smart contracts to remunerate people based on the amount of waste they have segregated. It uses waste bins with RFID tags and sensors. People can scan tags to build their accounts on the blockchain platform. Whenever a person throws segregated waste, the sensors in bins estimate the quantity of waste. The data is uploaded on the blockchain platform, where smart contracts determine the reward for waste segregation. It then auto-initiates transactions to transfer the reward amount to that person’s bank account.

Real-Time Waste Tracking

Blockchain enables real-time tracking of waste management. It helps to trace the number of waste collected, who collected it, and where it is being transferred for recycling or disposal. Arep, a subsidiary of SNCF, is already utilizing blockchain to trace waste at railway stations. It utilizes blockchain to accumulate detailed data about all waste bins with the help of Bluetooth. Bluetooth allows constant updates on the amount of waste present in bins. It also accumulates data like which waste managers emptied the bin and how it conveyed further for recycling and disposal.

Securing Data Transactions

There are various techniques to recycle or dispose of waste. Electing the proper technique is based on the type of waste. For example, plastic wastes can be recycled, and hazardous wastes can be disposed of in landfills. Nevertheless, to choose the best technique, waste management organizations require sufficient and accurate data about the waste they are accumulating. But, data is sometimes jeopardized due to human errors. Blockchain can further reduce human error and manage the accuracy of data throughout the waste management process. After determining the amount and variety of waste, collectors can upload the data on the blockchain platform. Every individual included in the waste management process can then see the blockchain’s data to make appropriate decisions.

With a blockchain-based waste management platform, governments can allow every individual to fulfill their duties towards their countries. Initiatives like paying tokens for segregating waste at the household level will help everyone to participate in the waste management movement. This will enhance waste management right from its generation. And it will ultimately lead to a more sustainable world.
