Shadowy maneuvers: remilia hacker funnels $4. 3m through tornado cash

Remilia Hacker Funnels $4.3M through Tornado Cash

Last Updated: June 18, 2024By

In an audacious move, the perpetrator behind the $4.3 million Remilia breach in March has channeled the purloined digital assets through the cryptocurrency obfuscator, Tornado Cash.

On June 17, blockchain surveillance entity CertiK unveiled that 1,209.5 Ether (ETH)—valued approximately at $4.3 million—was funneled into Tornado Cash. CertiK’s analysis traced these funds to multiple addresses implicated in the Remilia hack of March 16.

Exploit Aftermath: NFTs and ETH Dispersed

The cyber thief deposited the ill-gotten gains into the mixing service roughly three months post-attack. On March 16, Remilia’s and Milady’s originator, Krishna Okhandiar, also known as Charlotte Fang, publicly announced the breach. This declaration followed the transfer of significant volumes of ETH and NFTs to a wallet that swiftly liquidated the assets upon receipt.

The incident was spotlighted by an X account named Dumpster DAO, which disseminated a screenshot of the Remilia founder’s report on the hack. This account also disclosed the recipient address of the assets siphoned from Remilia-linked wallets.

Blockchain intel revealed that the address offloaded NFTs connected to Milady, including staked NFTx holdings, and relocated $1 million in ETH to an alternative address.

Memecoin Frenzy: Milady’s Homage

Merely two days following the cyber heist, a memecoin honoring Milady NFTs conducted a presale on the Solana network. On March 18, the token Milady Wif Hat (LADYF), inspired by the canine-themed memecoin Dog Wif Hat (WIF), amassed 91,486 Solana (SOL) within two hours post-announcement, worth $18.7 million at the time.

Due to overwhelming demand, the team vowed to return all excess SOL to the contributors. However, the token’s value has since plummeted, hitting an all-time low of $0.00001703 on June 14.

The creators of the memecoin, via their website, clarified their disassociation from Charlotte Fang and the Milady Maker NFTs. They stated, “This token is a tribute to an NFT collection we admire and recognize,” underscoring their independence from the original Milady project.
