Rainforest Foundation To Use Blockchain Tech To Save Brazilian Amazon

Last Updated: September 5, 2019By

A non-profit NGO, based in New York and working in South and Central America, called Rainforest Foundation, is looking to support the anti-deforestation initiative with blockchain and crypto technology.

Deforestation and fires in the Brazilian Amazon

Recently, the Rainforest Foundation asked support of the blockchain and crypto community to combat against deforestation and the loss through forest fires in Brazil. The foundation posted on their official website stating:

“Since Bolsonaro took office in January, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is up 75% and forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon have doubled compared to the past year. As guardians of our rainforests, its animals and its people, we are working with The Giving Block to form a coalition of crypto sponsors, donors and media partners who will help stop this devastation.”

The rainforest Foundation conveyed that they are accepting donations in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and other such digital currencies.

Using blockchain to assure transparency

The Rainforest Foundation, having the musician Sting as the co-founder, is developing a blockchain pilot to ensure transparency to enable donors to track the efforts taken by the foundation in the Amazon rainforest. They are purportedly also going to reward the locals with crypto for protecting these forests.

Furthermore, the Foundation is also testing the applications of smart contracts for putting an end to land trafficking, illegal logging, and also to safeguard forests from gold mining.

The executive director of Rainforest Foundation, Suzanne Pelletier, said that the crucial situation of the recent forest fire has led them to procure innovative solutions.

“Business as usual has gotten us to this point. Philanthropy as usual won’t get us out. We need innovative solutions, and no one is more innovative than cryptocurrency users,” she added.

Crypto and charity go hand in hand

Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology have been increasingly implemented to support a wide range of organization. Following the Hurricane Dorian, a Bahamas-based blockchain company is reaching out to blockchain and crypto communities assist them to support the victims of the hurricane.
