Pixels Crypto Game Sparks Renewed Interest in the Ronin Blockchain
Token Terminal Reports a 700% Surge in Ronin’s Blockchain User Base Over Recent Months
Amidst this year’s bullish market, various crypto narratives from previous cycles have resurfaced, with crypto gaming experiencing a notable revival. Within this realm, the Ronin network, known for its flagship game Axie Infinity, has regained prominence.
According to Token Terminal, Ronin’s user base has surged by over 700% since the beginning of 2024, outpacing the growth of Solana’s DeFi landscape fueled by meme coins and TON, Telegram’s blockchain platform. The catalyst behind Ronin’s resurgence is a single game called Pixels. This low-fi farming game allows players to cultivate digital land and undertake quests to earn digital currencies. Over the past month alone, Pixels has attracted 1.25 million unique users, as reported by DappRadar.

Beneath the surface, Pixels is generating a wave of enthusiasm reminiscent of the fervor surrounding Axie Infinity. In the Philippines, play-to-earn gaming has emerged as a viable source of income once again, as highlighted by the New York Times. Jeffery Zirlin, head of growth at Sky Mavis, the company behind the Ronin blockchain, noted that the popularity of crypto gaming has surpassed expectations.
Contrary to expectations that crypto gaming would thrive only with studio-quality titles, Pixels, a somewhat nostalgic pixelated farming game, has become the driving force in the sector. Unlike Axie Infinity, which was developed by Sky Mavis for the Ronin network, Pixels originated on Polygon before migrating to Ronin in October. Despite starting with just 3,000 daily active users, Pixels now boasts up to 750,000 users.
Although these figures are still a fraction of Axie Infinity’s peak user base, Zirlin emphasized that Ronin has an even larger user base, with 12.7 million wallet downloads. These users have the infrastructure to purchase NFTs that enhance gameplay in Pixels, although it’s not mandatory. Unlike Axie Infinity, Pixels allows users to set up their wallets and start earning later on.
Zirlin expressed Sky Mavis’s continued commitment to crypto gaming despite its cyclical nature, acknowledging that gaming experiences fluctuations in tandem with market trends. Nonetheless, he affirmed that the company is well-prepared to navigate these fluctuations, having been built with resilience in mind.
