Osmosis DAO Embraces Fee-Free Bitcoin Bridge

Last Updated: June 24, 2024By

Osmosis has cast its vote to incorporate a fee-free Bitcoin bridge, facilitating the migration of Bitcoin (BTC) into the Cosmos ecosystem. Central to this initiative is a revenue-sharing pact with the Bitcoin bridge Nomic, as conveyed in an announcement to CoinDesk on Friday. This bridge mechanism enhances blockchain interoperability by permitting users to transfer crypto assets across disparate systems.

The revenue-sharing arrangement aims to address a common issue with bridges: the distribution of earnings from deposits and withdrawals among various stakeholders. The proposed accord will synchronize Nomic’s protocol revenues with the usage of its bridged BTC, as outlined in the announcement.

The primary objective is to mitigate the obstacles users previously faced when transferring their Bitcoin holdings to other ecosystems for decentralized finance (DeFi) activities.

With less than a day remaining until the voting period concludes, an overwhelming 95% of the Osmosis DAO community has endorsed the proposal.

Nomic’s bridge exemplifies a broader movement among developers to capitalize on the value embedded in BTC, the preeminent cryptocurrency by market capitalization, thereby injecting liquidity into the expansive digital asset sphere. In April, Nomic revealed plans to integrate Babylon’s Bitcoin staking protocol and launch stBTC, a liquid staking token for Bitcoin.
