It’s easy to get lost in all the information and intricacies of cryptocurrencies. They’re unlike traditional currency but offer opportunities to become wealthy in the traditional sense and to make real-world purchases. While these facts enthral tech enthusiasts, they also garner attention from those who normally wouldn’t be interested in the tech industry. Add in the fact that some crypto coins are just plain weird, and it is easy to fall down a rabbit hole to learn more about all things crypto.

While the media often focuses on the explosive growth of coins like Bitcoin or Ethereum, we thought it would be fun to pay homage to the lesser-known and more bizarre crypto coins out there—like the ones that grew from memes or pop-culture obsessions and even the ones with political ties. From Dogecoin to the Useless Ethereum Token, here are some of the best and most bizarre crypto coins ever made available.

1. Dogecoin

Dogecoin was launched in 2013, turning a popular meme into a cryptocurrency—not as a valuable fintech game-changer but as a way to make people smile. The meme in question was a photo of a Shiba Inu named Kabosu, widely referred to as Doge, paired with colourful text that appeared as though they were thought bubbles of the dog’s internal monologue. The meme went viral in 2013 and became the muse of Dogecoin’s original developers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. The pair started the cryptocurrency as a joke, but the light-hearted fun of it transformed it into a valuable currency.

2. Catcoin

Cats are frequent subjects of internet entertainment; their attitudes are perfect for meme creation, and their antics make for amusing videos, so it should be no surprise that they found their way into a cryptocurrency, too. In fact, there are several crypto coins with cats at the heart of their existence, but Catcoin was one of the first to enter the market. It was released in 2013 and was a community-owned and operated crypto coin. Catcoin did not become a hugely successful cryptocurrency, financially speaking, so it never became a payment option on e-commerce sites or minimum deposit casinos in CA. However, it did have a thriving affiliated meme culture and cat community.

3. Coinye West

In 2014, the cryptocurrency Coinye West was released. The developers named the coin and designed its logo as a tribute to Kanye West, but he wasn’t a fan. He sued the developers for copyright infringement shortly after its release, leading to the coin being removed only a few months later.

4. $Trump

On January 17, 2025, just ahead of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the $Trump meme coin was launched, and its value soared in the days following. It reached a value of over $14.5 billion in just two days. The value has since plummeted, and the crypto has been the subject of cyberattacks. While Trump has said he wants to make America a leader in cryptocurrency, his launch of $Trump has been criticized by many in the industry.

5. Putincoin

Trump isn’t the only political leader with a cryptocurrency bearing his name—Russia’s president Vladimir Putin has one too: Putincoin. However, Putin didn’t create Putincoin. It was created to pay tribute to the country and its president, though it was made before Russia banned cryptocurrencies.

6. PotCoin

More and more regions are legalising the use and purchase of cannabis, and this has inspired several cannabis-related cryptocurrencies. PotCoin stands out among these options because of its connection to former basketball star Dennis Rodman. PotCoin developers sponsored part of his trip to North Korea in 2017, garnering the cryptocurrency a lot of attention. Montreal-based PotCoin aims to help the legal cannabis industry prosper through crypto payment solutions and cannabis-tracking solutions.

7. DentaCoin

Potcoin isn’t the only crypto coin serving a niche industry; DentaCoin does, too. DentaCoin leverages the security of blockchain to share patient files and to facilitate payments for dental work. The cryptocurrency aims to help improve dental health by incentivising patients to complete dental care tasks, like going for a regular cleaning, in exchange for tokens. The network also allows patients to review their dentists, helping to create more transparency and accountability. Overall, this unique cryptocurrency aims to improve dental care.

8. Garlicoin

Fans of garlic bread can take their love for this comfort food to a new level with Garlicoin, a meme-based and community-led crypto coin. Development began in 2017, and by January of 2018, Garlicoin was launched. Garlic serves as the theme for everything the cryptocurrency does, with its guides and resources called “Garlic Recipes” and its website adorned with animated pieces of garlic bread waving at visitors.

9. Pickle Token

Much like garlic, pickles have a fanbase large enough to inspire the creation of a cryptocurrency called Pickle Finance. Pickle Finance was developed to maximise investor yields that are as hassle-free as possible. To accomplish this, Pickle Finance autocompounds yields so investors don’t have to think about it. This cryptocurrency leaned into the pickle theme, with pooled investments held in pickle jars and pickles used throughout its visual branding.

10. WhopperCoin

In 2017, Burger King Russia debuted something unexpected: WhopperCoins. For every Whopper sandwich purchased, interested customers could be awarded a WhopperCoin through the Burger King app. With enough collected tokens, customers could exchange them for a free Whopper. This was an unexpected move, considering the country’s stance on cryptocurrencies.

11. Useless Ethereum Token

The Useless Ethereum Token is truly bizarre; it exists solely to offer no value to investors—and it’s completely honest about that fact. Its Twitter profile (now X) says it’s “the world’s first 100% honest Ethereum ICO [Initial Coin Offering],” though its honesty may have been too much, as it seems this crypto coin has been discontinued.
