As the United States continues to be a stronghold for the growing crypto community, New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams has taken steps to show his ambition in the crypto space. Adams revealed he would be taking his first three paychecks as Bitcoin, a move that could become a norm in his tenure.

The mayor-elect has huge plans of turning New York City into a crypto-friendly city and hopes to see more citizens enrol in the booming crypto market. Adams made his intentions known while replying to a tweet by Miami Mayor Francis Saurez. He wrote, “In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first three paychecks in bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC it’s going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing innovative industries.”

The former police captain was elected this week to take over at the end of mayor Bill de Blasio’s term in January, and already, he has his fans backing him after his pleasant announcement. His tweet has been shared thousands of times and several comments praising his innovative mode of thinking.

Adams to Change the City

Adams has not hidden his intentions of emulating Suarez, who was recently re-elected as Mayor of Miami, in turning his city into a digital commercial hub. In a recent chat with Bloomberg, the newly-elected mayor expressed his admiration for Miamicoin, which he confessed was going well. Adams confirmed his plans to follow after Suares and make a similar move. Also, he promised to provide more clarity on the crypto space and understands the factors limiting the mass adoption of bitcoin and cryptocurrency in New York City, one of the most populated cities in the county.

Adams, a Democrat, will become the city’s second black mayor, and in a previous address to his supporters, he promised to change the city into a successful commercial centre within the first year of his election. He said, “In one year, one year, you’re going to see a different city … We’re going to bring businesses here. We’re going to become the center of life science, the center of cybersecurity, the center of self-driving cars, drones, the center of bitcoins. We are going to be the center of all technology.”

Cryptocurrency has not been given the most friendly welcome in New York since its inception. There has been a suspicious undertone attached to it, but hopefully, Adams can play a part in changing the narrative. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who will stand for election as governor of New York, recently launched a crackdown on unregistered cryptocurrency companies. Many experts believe Adams has a huge amount of work to do if crypto is going to receive recognition in New York.
