Ethereum in talks to acquire its first top-level domain name
According to an August 3 press release, Ethereum has entered into an agreement with Minds + Machines Groups Limited (MMX), the provider of end-to-end domain services, which will let the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) acquire its top-level domain name.
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a project within the Ethereum development community in order to create a decentralized domain name registry for the decentralized web. It allows the users to register a unique domain name for their wallet address, and get their funds directly transferred to this name instead of an address.
As per the agreement, Ethereum users will be able to register their addresses with “.luxe” – MMX’s top-level domain name. ‘.luxe’ is an abbreviation for “Let U Xchange Easily.”
Domain names registered with .luxe extension can be integrated with the Ethereum blockchain and all other Ethereum services such as the dApps, distributed storage, and smart contacts. Instead of a 40-character long and complex hash identifier, the extension will provide a user-friendly way to access the ethereum’s blockchain and services.
In addition to the blockchain related services, the .luxe extension will help to resolve the email and web-based traffic. Users can, therefore, use their extensions for traditional internet activity in addition to the Ethereum based services.
The .luxe domain name will pre-launch soon and will be open for public sale from October 30 on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Nick Johnson, the lead developer of ENS, commented:
“We’re very excited to be helping advance integration between existing DNS-based name services and the Ethereum Name Service, improving usability for blockchain applications and users.”
