Dubai Customs has unveiled an avant-garde blockchain platform designed to ameliorate supply chain inefficiencies both within Dubai and across its borders. This blockchain endeavor is part of a comprehensive strategy to fortify Dubai’s stature as a premier “smart” city, as disclosed by the Dubai Media Office on July 8.
“This groundbreaking innovation epitomizes our vision to transform Dubai into a global nexus for trade and logistics,” articulated Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation.
“We are confident that the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain will vastly enhance the business milieu and bolster Dubai’s status as a pivotal hub for international trade,” Bin Sulayem affirmed.

He further elucidated that the blockchain solution is poised to economize time and effort by streamlining numerous procedures, thereby expediting customs clearance and commercial transactions. Moreover, this platform will augment supply chain transparency by enabling tamper-resistant data sharing and curtailing the extensive paperwork typically involved in these processes.
“Our objective is to render the business ecosystem in Dubai more seamless, efficient, and transparent,” declared Dr. Abdullah Busnad, Director General of Dubai Customs. Blockchain technology has long been heralded as a panacea for real-time tracking of items within supply chains and for mitigating fraud and counterfeiting.
Nonetheless, academic discourse in 2022 identified persistent obstacles to widespread adoption. A notable blockchain supply chain initiative by tech giant IBM was terminated in November 2022. IBM, in conjunction with its partner, Danish logistics firm Maersk, attributed the discontinuation of TradesLens to a dearth of “global industry collaboration.”
Despite these setbacks, other blockchain platforms have continued to make significant inroads. VeChain, renowned for its smart contract-compatible blockchain tailored for supply-chain tracking, has been operational since 2016. Chainlink, another prominent blockchain, has been facilitating supply-chain automation since its inception in 2019. Additionally, the Hong Kong-based Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) has emerged as a significant player in the blockchain supply chain arena.
As Dubai Customs spearheads this blockchain initiative, the city inches closer to its vision of a fully integrated, smart urban environment, setting new benchmarks in global trade and logistics.
