Celebrating Blockchain for Good: Social Impacts for the Betterment of All

Last Updated: May 18, 2022By

Envision a world where every individual, male or female has accessibility to basic amenities, allowing them to enjoy a life of equality. Women, especially in underdeveloped and emerging economies are most prone to gender inequality. The good news is that blockchain technology holds the potential for allowing each global citizen to gain access to critical government information and services, enabling a more decentralized and democratic world.

According to The World Bank’s State of Electricity Access Report (SEAR) 2017, the world has not achieved significant advancement in terms of its 2030 universal electricity access goal.  Energy is inextricably linked to a number of development challenges, including health, food, education, poverty reduction, employment and climate change. This suggests a need for solutions to achieve universal electricity access for everyone.

Since electricity generation costs differ from region to region, off-grid electricity solutions like microgrids may prove useful. Also, as migration is increasing, remittance transferring platforms need a quick and cheap alternative.

One project that’s contributing to the conversation in this space is IDBox, a solution used to create secure and Unique Identities using Blockchain technology and Artificial Intelligence. The highlighting part of IDBox is that it can create a digital identity without using electricity or the Internet. As a result, this project supported by the Central Bank of Papua New Guinea, Australian government, and Abt Associates, is bringing connectivity to inaccessible places around the world.

Says Dr. Jane Thomason, Blockchain for Social Impact Advisor and Global Ambassador of the British Blockchain Association: “We demonstrated this technology at U.N. Women in New York, and were able to send micro-remittances directly to a woman in Papua New Guinea in 3 seconds from New York. If this can be taken to scale, it has tremendous application in humanitarian and other hard to reach settings. Yes, it’s still early but the potential is significant.

Blockchain Fuels Advancement Potential for Women

Workforce advancement represents another area where technology can have a critical impact. In this era of decentralization and blockchain market advancement, participation among women is of particular importance. The unbending of the existing male dominated status quo can be achieved in an efficient way by providing solutions like decentralized self-sovereign identity, access to coding courses and other links to economic opportunities.

The World Blockchain Academy For Girls is one such project that’s seeking to create greater opportunities for young girls and women in the field of technology. The Academy will provide a decentralized online content delivery platform offering a wide range of open-source educational content about Blockchain and other emerging technologies. Furthermore, it will deliver educational resources tied to the age, ability, and other key factors involving women.

The Academy also aims to improve communication between alumni, employers, influencers, and higher education providers by helping girls and women develop sound networks and partnerships. Current efforts involving this project are directed toward scaling the program to decentralize access to instrumental and educational content.

Concludes Thomason: “The World Blockchain Academy of Girls is a vision focused on the idea that if you can create virtual and physical spaces that are girl friendly and allow them to embrace blockchain, this — in addition to role models and funding opportunities — can create a global movement which can bring girls into the digital age.”
