Bitcoin Innovator Burak Unveils Groundbreaking Layer 2 Solution ‘Brollups’
The Bitcoin developer renowned for uncovering a critical flaw in the Lightning Network, which necessitated an urgent update in 2022, is now channeling his expertise into a novel Bitcoin layer 2 project, set to revolutionize decentralized finance on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Enter Brollups: Burak’s Vision for Decentralized Finance on Bitcoin
The enigmatic Bitcoin developer known as “Burak,” who previously introduced the Lightning Network alternative Ark Protocol, has now unveiled a new layer 2 solution named “Brollups.”
Brollups presents a pioneering Bitcoin-native rollup architecture, aggregating transactions without the need for a Bitcoin hard fork or the issuance of a non-Bitcoin token. Burak elucidated this innovative approach in a detailed Medium post dated June 21, stating that Brollups remains in its “design phase.” He intimated to Cointelegraph that a testnet, or signet rollout, might be anticipated later this year.
Brollups: Transforming Bitcoin’s DeFi Landscape
Burak envisions Brollups as a transformative tool capable of supporting over 90% of decentralized finance (DeFi) use cases once it launches. He illustrated various applications, such as enabling the sale of NFTs in exchange for Bitcoin, where transactions are executed directly with Bitcoin, or placing token sell orders on decentralized exchanges, all conducted with atomic precision, verifiability, scalability, and enforceability on the Bitcoin network.
Operational Dynamics of Brollups
The protocol will be overseen by “operators,” who will provide liquidity and manage the rollup state by chaining Bitcoin transactions at predetermined intervals. These transactions will be executed on the Bitcoin Virtual Machine, ensuring seamless integration and performance.
Community Acclaim and Technical Mastery
Burak has garnered significant acclaim within the Bitcoin community for devising this solution without necessitating a hard fork or the creation of a new token, showcasing his technical prowess and innovative thinking.
From Lightning Network Exploits to Building Scalable Solutions
In October 2022, Burak made headlines by exploiting the Lightning Network using a 998-of-999 multisignature Taproot transaction. This exploit prompted an emergency update from Lightning Network node operators after causing a temporary desynchronization of all nodes. Although no funds were stolen, the incident, which incurred only a $5 transaction fee, underscored an unintended consequence of the Taproot upgrade, highlighting Burak’s deep understanding of Bitcoin’s technical landscape.
